Kentucky native Josh Hutcherson is making a splash in the new HBO comedy series I Love LA, taking on the role of Dylan, the boyfriend of main character Maia, played by actress and creator Rachel Sennott. The show centers on a group of female friends navigating life, relationships and internet-fueled culture in Los Angeles.

Hutcherson, who grew up in Union, Kentucky, joins a cast that includes Odessa A’zion as Tallulah (Maia’s estranged influencer friend), Jordan Firstman as Charlie (a celebrity stylist), and True Whitaker as Alani, among others. The series is produced by HBO Entertainment in partnership with Blumhouse Television, and Sennott also serves as writer, EP and director for certain episodes.

The first season of I Love LA debuts Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes rolling out weekly on HBO and streaming on Max. The season consists of eight episodes in total.

Reviews and early responses have been generally warm. On Rotten Tomatoes the show carries a critics’ score in the high-70s to low-80s, while on Metacritic it has landed at approximately 64/100 – categorised as “generally favourable.” Media outlets highlight the show’s sharp take on young adult life in an era of social media and instant fame. For example, Variety praises the series for capturing the “emptiness of internet fame almost too well,” while The Guardian notes a bit of a rough start but suggests the show “finds itself” by mid-season.

Hutcherson’s character, Dylan, is described as a relatively grounded presence amid L.A.’s influencer chaos – the only “half-way tolerable character,” according to one review – though still somewhat lacking in personality beyond his love for Maia and his interest in nerdy history books. The show’s tone has been compared to a mix of Girls, Entourage and The Other Two, with a specifically female-driven viewpoint: instead of the classic male “man-child” comedies of the early 2000s, I Love LA centres women who cat-fight in TikTok videos, whine to their parents and swipe expensive purses in mid-life-crisis themed escapades.

HBO’s press materials confirm the creative team includes Rachel Sennott as creator and star; Lorene Scafaria as director on multiple episodes; and other executive producers such as Emma Barrie and Max Silvestri. Production credits list Blumhouse Television alongside HBO Entertainment.

For viewers in the U.S., tuning into the Sunday prime-time slot or streaming via Max will give full access to each week’s release. The show’s eight-episode run allows the narrative to unravel gradually — the weekly drop allows discussion and reactions between episodes.

In summary: Josh Hutcherson joins Rachel Sennott in I Love LA as Dylan, the boyfriend of Maia, in a series about a circle of friends in modern‐day Los Angeles. With its November 2 launch and strong early reviews, the show offers a fresh look at young adult life through a female lens, combining ambition, internet culture and friendship.
