Jacksonville State University’s Department of Theatre and Film is giving Shakespeare a hilarious, fast-paced twist this fall with its upcoming outdoor production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised] [Again] — a show that squeezes all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays into just 97 minutes. The production will run from November 7 to November 10 at the Stone Center amphitheater, offering both evening performances and weekend matinees.

Directed by Professor Michael Boyton, a longtime Shakespeare enthusiast, and co-directed by Dr. Alicia Corts, the department head, the show promises an energetic blend of slapstick humor, quick wit, and audience-friendly outdoor fun. The production is based on the well-known script by London’s Reduced Shakespeare Company, which has been updated over the years to include modern references and fresh jokes, ensuring it stays relevant and entertaining for today’s audiences.

“It’s extremely funny,” said Dr. Corts, noting the show’s lively, physical energy. “You might even laugh enough that you might get too warm.” She added that the amphitheater setting creates a cozy, informal environment perfect for families. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets and settle under the stars for an evening of comedy. “It’s a beautiful space for people to enjoy the outdoors and a great show,” she said. “If kids run around, they won’t disturb anyone—it’s a looser, more relaxed way to experience theater.”

The Stone Center amphitheater, located behind the main building on campus, accommodates about 200 guests. Because it’s an outdoor venue, seating is on a first-come basis, so early arrival is recommended.

The show’s second act is dedicated entirely to Hamlet, performed in several inventive forms — fast, faster, and even backwards. Corts described it as “a wild ride” and a great challenge for the student actors, who must maintain precise comedic timing and physical energy. “This show is all about rhythm,” she explained. “The students have to hit every joke and movement perfectly, almost like a military drill.”

Behind the scenes, the entire production is student-driven. From lighting and sound to costume design and digital projections, theater students have taken full creative control. This hands-on approach allows them to build professional portfolios and gain real-world experience before graduation.

The show leans into its playful chaos with handmade props and mismatched costumes that add to the comedy’s charm. Expect foam skulls, paper swords, and other goofy creations designed to keep the audience laughing. “The premise is that three people who aren’t really actors try to perform all of Shakespeare’s plays,” Corts said. “So it’s intentionally silly and self-aware.”

Concessions will be available at every performance, with warm drinks and cookies sold by the university’s Alpha Psi Omega theater honor society. Proceeds from these sales will support future student productions and theater-related activities.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased through Jax State Arts. Admission is free for Jacksonville State University students and employees.
