Pete Davidson and Ella Purnell Team Up for Bold New Romantic Comedy That Time We Met
Pete Davidson is diving into new territory with his next big-screen role — a romantic comedy titled That Time We Met, where he’ll star opposite Ella Purnell, best known for her performances in Yellowjackets and Fallout. The film is directed by Nick Lieberman, who previously co-directed Theater Camp, and written by Mitchell Winkie, bringing together a creative team that seems ready to shake up the rom-com formula.
Described as a “cosmic romantic comedy”, That Time We Met follows a new couple who discover that their unborn child is destined to save humanity — right after realizing they can’t stand each other. The premise promises a mix of heart, humor, and absurdity, giving both Davidson and Purnell room to play in unexpected ways. The movie is expected to blend emotional chaos with sci-fi-tinged comedy, a concept that sounds tailor-made for Davidson’s offbeat charm and Purnell’s grounded screen presence.
The project boasts an impressive production lineup. It’s being produced by Matt Jackson and Joanne Lee of Jackson Pictures, the company behind Molly’s Game, alongside Marc Platt Productions, the team responsible for Wicked: For Good. Producers Ford Corbett and Nathan Klingher are leading the charge under Gramercy Park Media, known for Goodrich. Executive producers Joshua Harris and Mark Fasano from Gramercy are also attached, ensuring the film has solid backing from experienced industry players.
The movie’s sales will be handled by WME Independent, which plans to launch the project at the American Film Market (AFM) next week. While no official release date has been announced yet, AFM involvement indicates the team is gearing up to secure distribution and push the film into the global market soon.
For Pete Davidson, That Time We Met marks yet another step in expanding his acting range. Earlier this year, he appeared in the horror film The Home, a project that reunited him with James DeMonaco, the creator of The Purge franchise.

Davidson also co-starred with Eddie Murphy in the action comedy The Pickup, which hit theaters in August. And he’s not slowing down — he’s also set to appear in How to Rob a Bank, directed by David Leitch (Bullet Train), which is slated for release next fall through Amazon MGM Studios.
Meanwhile, Ella Purnell continues to rise after earning praise for her work in Fallout. That Time We Met will be her first major romantic comedy lead, and her pairing with Davidson adds an intriguing dynamic that could give the film a unique spark.
With its wild concept, strong creative team, and charismatic leads, That Time We Met sounds like one of the more daring romantic comedies currently in development. Fans of both actors — and anyone who enjoys a genre mashup that doesn’t take itself too seriously — will definitely want to keep an eye on this one.
