Charlie Heaton and Mia Wasikowska to Star in Australian Romantic Comedy “Twice Over”

Exciting news for film lovers — Charlie Heaton and Mia Wasikowska are teaming up for a new romantic comedy titled “Twice Over.” The film, directed by Alena Lodkina, promises an intimate and emotionally rich story exploring love, reconnection, and the quiet complexities of relationships. The project has already drawn attention for its strong creative lineup and production backing from major Australian film bodies.
“Twice Over” is an Australian production that will be filmed on location in Perth toward the end of 2025. The movie is currently in pre-production and has secured support from Screen Australia, along with Screenwest and Lotterywest. The film is being handled internationally by Heretic, an Athens-based boutique sales company known for championing unique, artist-driven projects.
The story follows two people whose unexpected reunion stirs up long-buried feelings and unspoken uncertainties about love, time, and reinvention. It’s described as an “intimate, quietly offbeat story of reconnection and emotional reckoning.” With that premise, audiences can expect a reflective and modern take on second chances — a film that examines the what ifs of love and the passage of time with depth and subtle humor.
Behind the camera, the project brings together an impressive team. Alena Lodkina, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Miles Allinson, is known for her previous films “Strange Colours” (Venice Biennale College, 2017) and “Petrol” (Locarno Film Festival 2022, New Directors/New Films 2023). Lodkina has been praised as one of the most original voices in contemporary Australian cinema, celebrated for her distinctive blend of realism, mystery, and emotional precision.
Charlie Heaton, best known for “Stranger Things,” “The Souvenir Part II,” and “The New Mutants,” joins Mia Wasikowska, acclaimed for performances in “Bergman Island,” “Club Zero,” and “Alice in Wonderland.” The two actors are expected to bring a compelling chemistry to the screen, something Heretic’s Head of Sales, Ioanna Stais, highlighted as “electric under Lodkina’s daring direction.”
The film’s cinematography will be led by J-P Passi, whose acclaimed work includes “Compartment No. 6,” “Chernobyl,” “The Last of Us,” and “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.” The casting is handled by Shaheen Baig, a BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning casting director known for projects like “Black Mirror” and “Adolescence.”
On the production side, “Twice Over” is produced by Kate Glover and Nathan Lewis for Never/Sleep Pictures, Aidan O’Bryan for WBMC, and Gregory Jankilevitsch for Mid-March Media. Executive producers include Klaudia Smieja, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Samantha Lang, Lee Hazeldene, Ioanna Stais, and Giorgos Karnavas. Glover has previously collaborated with Heretic on notable films like “Hot Milk” (Berlinale Competition) and “Sacrifice” (TIFF Special Presentations).
While no release date has been announced yet, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a tender, wry, and thought-provoking modern love story. According to Louise Gough, Director of Narrative Content, the film “offers a different perspective on looking for love, regret, and the what if of it all.”
