Kendrick Lamar’s Live-Action Comedy With the South Park Creators Faces Another Release Delay
Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming live-action comedy film with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, has hit yet another delay with no new release date currently confirmed. The project was first announced in early 2022, sparking major curiosity because it marks an unusual collaboration between a Grammy-winning rapper and two iconic comedy filmmakers.
The film was originally set for a July 4, 2025 premiere under Paramount Pictures, giving it a high-profile holiday release spot. That plan changed when the studio pushed the date to March 20, 2026, signaling early production adjustments.
Now the movie has been postponed again, and this time, Paramount has not assigned a new target date at all. A joint statement from Lamar’s company pGLang and Parker and Stone’s production banner Park County acknowledged the shift, simply saying, “It’s true – we’re moving (again). We’re working hard at finishing the movie.”
Since the film’s announcement, very little confirmed information has been shared publicly, and even the title remains undisclosed. The production has kept casting details similarly under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about who will star in this unusual and socially layered comedy.
One of the few concrete details available is the plot premise, which revolves around a young Black man working as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum. His world turns upside down when he learns that the ancestors of his white girlfriend once owned his own ancestors, setting up a storyline that mixes humor with a bold look at racial history.
Dave Free, co-founder of pGLang and longtime collaborator of Lamar, is also listed as a co-producer on the project. In earlier coverage, Paramount executives described the screenplay by Vernon Chatman as one of the funniest and most original scripts they had ever read, raising expectations for a distinctive blend of comedy and commentary.
For those wanting a background on Parker and Stone’s broader work, their longstanding legacy with South Park can be explored on the official Comedy Central page. Kendrick Lamar’s creative ventures through pGLang can also be followed via their official website.
This film comes at a particularly eventful moment for Kendrick Lamar, who recently earned nine nominations for the 2026 Grammy Awards for his sixth album GNX, released last November. His nine nods place him ahead of major artists such as Lady Gaga, Jack Antonoff, and Cirkut, who each hold seven nominations.
Artists including Sabrina Carpenter, Leon Thomas, Serban Ghenea, and Bad Bunny received six nominations each, rounding out an exceptionally competitive field. The Grammy ceremony is scheduled for February 1 in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
In a five-star review of GNX, NME praised Lamar’s ability to turn dark themes into powerful emotional reflections, noting how he transforms negativity into a message centered on love. That review can be read in full on NME’s website.
For now, fans will have to remain patient as Lamar, Parker, and Stone continue refining their ambitious live-action comedy project. With such high-profile collaborators and a provocative concept, the film remains one of the most intriguing releases currently in development, even if its final premiere date is still uncertain.
