Harwood Theatre Brings Magical Comedy Puffs to the Stage This November

The Harwood Theatre is set to bring a spellbinding dose of laughter and heart to local audiences with its upcoming production of “Puffs”, running from November 6 to 8 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Directed by Scott Weigand, the play promises a whimsical and lighthearted twist on a familiar wizarding tale — one that celebrates those who might not always be the heroes of the story.

For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story,” says Weigand, quoting the show’s playful description. “This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too.” The director describes the production as “a tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world,” adding that it’s filled with the stories fans know well — and plenty of surprises they didn’t see coming.

Taking center stage as the core trio are Tarin Askew and Julia Wulff, both juniors, portraying Wayne and Megan, alongside freshman Silvan Thompson as Oliver. The production’s narrator, who helps guide the audience through the zany magical world of the Puffs, is sophomore Nyx Gilso.

The talented ensemble cast adds even more energy and humor to the performance. The lineup of Puffs includes seniors Maddie Stephan and Casey Klus, junior Thalia Buyer-Little, sophomore Violet Ames, and freshmen Alex Fury, Addy McCain, and Eli Askew. Supporting them are sophomores Maya Muchler, Sage Erwin, and Izzy Pockoski, as well as freshmen Abbie Stephan, Ash Deveccio, and Campbell Skates — all bringing unique flair to the lively magical world on stage.

Weigand describes the play as “an enchanting evening filled with laughter, friendship, and a touch of magic.” It’s a hilarious and touching tribute to those who “strive for greatness, even when they’re not the main characters.” That spirit of perseverance and humor, he says, is what makes the story relatable to anyone who’s ever felt like a background character in someone else’s adventure.

“Puffs,” written by Matt Cox, has become a favorite among high school and community theatre groups for its witty, self-aware humor and affectionate nods to a world of spells, wands, and school rivalries. The play gives a clever behind-the-scenes view of magical school life — not from the perspective of the famous hero, but from the group of underdogs known as the Puffs.

Audiences can expect a night full of clever references, fast-paced humor, and heartwarming moments, all delivered by a cast that clearly loves what they’re doing. Performances will be held in the Harwood Union High School Theatre, with tickets available at the door: $5 for students and $10 for adults.

For fans of magical comedies, “Puffs” is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a creative, laughter-filled evening right in Waterbury, Vermont. Whether you’re a longtime admirer of wizarding stories or simply love a well-done comedy, this production promises to charm audiences of all ages.
